The scent of Christmas~ shutter swags

When I smell a fresh cut Christmas tree, my mind and emotions are flooded with memories!

It always amazes me how our sense of smell is connected to past events! The whole history of scents for healing goes way back! The oils and aromatics mentioned in the Bible were more valuable than gold and silver.  Israel’s King Hezekiah kept “the spices, and the precious ointment”  together with silver and gold in the royal treasure chamber. 2 Kings 20:13 This is one of the reasons I love to incorporate fresh cut greenery into my Christmas decor; the meanings and the memories!

I’ve made fresh cut evergreen swags in the past, but wanted to try something a bit different this year, and this is what I came up

with… early christmas and amiah 0211

I love the look and might just have to keep them there year round, changing the swag to go with the season! To get this look for yourself, you’ll need a set of shutters as a foundation. If shutters can’t be found, an old piece of barn board or rustic wood would work just fine! Image

The next thing is collecting the rest of the materials needed to pull the whole thing together~ Image

Decide on your color scheme and choose the ornaments and ribbon you’d like to use. Then, go for a walk and clip a few of your favorite greens. Here I have white pine, arborvitae and magnolia clippings. They were found right in our backyard! Twist craft wire around the stems to pull the greens together, and then make a loop at the end to hang the swag onto the shutters!

Make a bow with a 10-12″ diameter to attach to the top of the greens, or purchase one if that’s more convenient! Once the bow is in place, attach the ornaments to the swag. I hot glued the reindeer to the snowflake and then tied them to the top of the swag.

These swags were simple to make and not only look good, but bring a sweet fragrance to the room, a feast for the senses you might say! When you decorate with natural fragrances such as evergreens this year, remember your own sweet memories of Christmas’ past, as you look forward to making the new memories in your future!

XOXO  heidi ~”Hezekiah received the messengers and showed them all that was in his storehouses–the silver, the gold, the spices and the fine oil–his armory and everything found among his treasures.” 2 Kings 20:13
